Heaven on Earth: Manuscript Illumination at the National Gallery of Art

Washington DC- The national gallery of Art presents the first in-depth look at these rare works of art in Washington since a major exhibition in 1975. In the last three decades a vast amount of research has been conducted on manuscripts and the Gallery has added to its treasures in the permanent collection with several important recent acquisitions. Dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries and made in France, Germany, Austria, Bohemia, the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy, the works depict a range of religious and secular subjects. Some 52 single leaves and four bound volumes will be accompanied by comprehensive wall texts including new attributions and scholarly information, uncovered since the last time they were exhibited. These visual riches will be on view in the East Building, March 1 through August 2, 2009.
