Verdi’s powerful opera about the defeat, enslavement, and exile of the ancient Babylonian Jews
Franco Vassallo in the title role -For the first time in the company’s 56 years, WNO brings Nabucco, the opera that made Verdi famous, tothe Opera House stage. In this DC premiere, a stunning new production by Thaddeus Strassberger depicts the epic struggle of the Jews suppressed by Babylon’s King Nabucco as echoed by Italy’s nationalist conflict with Austria at the time Verdi created the opera.
Opening May 12– Massenets’s | WERTHER
One hundred twenty years after the opera’s premiere, Werther is celebrated as one of Massenet’s finest works, with a lush score of tragically beautiful music. Italian tenor Francesco Meli makes his WNO debut as the lovelorn poet Werther, and is joined by mezzo-soprano Sonia Ganassi as Charlotte. Chris Alexander directs and WNO favorite Emmanuel Villaume returns to conduct Massenet’s masterpiece.

Jan 29 to July 6- The Baroque genius of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione The National Gallery is showcasing approximately 80 works on paper by the Italian baroque master as well as works by his contemporaries and followers. The exhibition, will be on view in the West Building of the National Gallery of Art, Ground Floor
